For the purposes of this website, a “shelter” is where a lost animal would end up for the 72 hour hold. Some shelters also keep animals for adoption. A “humane society” or “rescue group” does not necessarily have lost animals; many have only animals that are past the hold period and ready for adoption.

There are many, many rescue groups active throughout the Bay Area. This list, although quite long, is certainly not exhaustive. If you are part of a rescue group not mentioned and would like to be added to the list, please send an email and you’ll be put on right away.
Many rescue groups get pets from shelters after the three-day hold has expired. If your pet has been missing for more than three days, you need to be checking all of the rescue groups in your area. Some rescue groups will take pets straight from the street and make them adoptable, without even putting them through the three-day owner-claim period, so it's a good idea to even start checking these groups before your pet has been gone for three days.
